The flow of energy moves through living organisms via the food chain. A food chain is a diagram which shows how every living thing gets energy to live. Plants use the sun, nutrients in the soil and water to generate energy. Herbivores eat the plants to generate energy to survive. Carnivores eat the herbivores to generate energy.

Matter moves through the biosphere by being cycled through various organic and inorganic stages. They are neither created nor destroyed. The biosphere is known as a closed system so no elements can escape. They are continually being recycled.

Matter flows within biosphere through the process of recycling by biochemical cycles and organisms.

Organisms transform matter but do not deplete it. Examples of matter flow within the biosphere are nutrient cycle and water cycle.

Nutrient cycle includes other compounds and elements which are necessary for life and exchanged by various organisms. Examples are phosphorus cycle, carbon cycle, and nitrogen.

Solar energy arrives and it is converted into chemical by plants which are being eaten by animals. They are converted again and animal is either dies or it is eaten by another animal or it is broken down by decomposers.

Energy then is converted back to basic elements for plants which feeds off with the assistance of solar energy therefore the cycle starts again.
