Why mitochondria is also known as powerhouse of the cell?

This is because mitochondria performs anaerobic respiration due to the presence of oxygen. Hence this powers cell activities to make new protoplasm and also to provide energy. Especially in plants when transporting food, it does it via active transport which requires energy. Hope understand.
