The process is called pollination which is an extremely complex process. To keep things nice and simple there are two types of plants, angiosperms (flowering plants) and gymnosperms (other seed plants). They have different pollination processes. The stigma is the female reproductive organ of the plant. The male part is known as the anther, which produces the pollen grain. The pollination process for angiosperms is usually carried out by wind, water, or insects. The pollination process for gymnosperms is usually separated into two main modes based on the type of gymnosperm. For ginkgo and cycads the sperm swims directly to the egg in the ovule. For conifers and gnetophytes the sperm is transported to the egg with the use of pollen tubes. This is a basic explanation for greater detail refer to your textbook or wiki.
