A diploid cell has a set of chromosomes from both parents. For example a human diploid cell has 46 chromosomes (23 from each parent). These would be somatic (body) cells since there are homologous pairs of chromosomes. A haploid cell would just have the 23 chromosomes. These would be egg and sperm.
