    Osmosis. Osmosis is the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration through a partially permeable membrane. As the water molecules move out of or into the cell by passing through the cell surface membrane, that is a partially permeable membrane, the process is called osmosis.
