it is the movement of solvent molecules from an area of higher concentration to that of the lower concentration through a semi permeable membrane ...

    its other types are

    1. isotonic

    2. hypotonic

    3. hypertonic

    importance:

because of this process roots absorb moisture from soil ...

because of osmosis nutrients can move from one cell to the next one and also waste materials are excreted ...

ill use salt as an example

a hypertonic solution means that there is a higher concentration of salt on the outside of the cell, and there is a lower concentration of salt on the inside.

The water wants to rush out into the solution so it highers the amt. of salt inside and lowers outside (to reach equilibrium)

this means it would shrivel and die.

In a hypotonic solution, its reverse. theres more salt on the inside, so water rushes in. the cell will swell and pop.

this is why saltwater fish cant survive in fresh water! Source:bio class. hate it; gotta love it. Asker's Rating & Comment
