Many cultures and religions have customs which deal with the way they use the land. For example, in Judaism, it is required that a field be left fallow (unplanted) every seventh year.     When a land is cultivated every year, and is not allowed to rest, the land is overused, thus leading to soil degradation. However customs like Judaism which prescribes that a field be left fallow (unplanted) every seventh year prevents degradation and consequently enhances organic soil fertility.
