    Each chromosome in humans has a maternal and paternal version. These pairs are called homologous chromosomes. Homologous chromosomes are similar but not identical. They contain the same genes in the same loci which enable them to align correctly with each other before separating during meiosis, but the alleles may not be the same. T he homologous chromosomes are the basis for Mendelian inheritance.
