Why is it important for plants to have mechanisms to prevent self-fertilization?

    If plants didn't have mechanisms to prevent self-fertilization, then homozygosity would occur, which is the same genes a plant has. The occurrence of homozygosity of a plant on itself can lead to the reduction of genetic diversity among plants.
