A. Proteins

This is because proteins happen to be macromolecules and they are able to do a variety of things, they have a complex structure which allows them to specialize in certain functions, and there are more proteins than actual DNA. So, this led scientists to believed that the protein contained DNA. That was until they realized that proteins can break down and alter its shape.
