What are two reasons serial dilution is a useful technique for counting populations of bacteria?

    1. It can be hard to count undiluted populations as there are so many, by diluting, the count can be done simpler and verified by the average of different counts.

    2. Bacteria colonies are likely to cover the entire plate if the number is high, therefore making it virtually impossible to count them.
