Compared to absolute dating, what is a disadvantage of relative dating? Fossils must be in undisturbed rock layers to determine age. Age, in years, cannot be determined for an individual fossil. Age can be determined by comparing the depth of one rock layer to another. Two or more fossils must be compared to determine age.

    Because absolute dating gives you a more exact product, a disadvantage of relative dating is that it is mostly an educated, less accurate guess that gives you a product that tells about what era the fossil could be from.
