What role do bacteria play in the nitrogen cycle?

    Both soil and the ocean contain charcoal microbes, assigned to the Archaeologist, that convert ammonia to nitrites. They are more abundant than the nitrifying bacteria and may turn out to play an important role in the nitrogen cycle.
