When athletes exercise, what is the primary physiological variable responsible for their sustained increase in ventilation rate?

    when athletes exercise, or their body works out, they intake more oxygen and let out more canbon di oxide. So their heart pumping speed increases which results in higher breathing rates and higher pulse. So they are physically more fit than a person who doesn't workout.
