The Earth orbits the sun in an elliptical path, as do most large orbiting bodies. The force driving its travel is due to the gravitational pull of the sun. Gravity between two objects is related to the mass of the objects and the distance between them. Since the distance changes depending on where the Earth is at any given day it the elliptical path, the force of gravity, and thus the travel velocity, fluctuates.

On average, the Earth is 93 million miles (149,600,000 km) from the Sun, a distance is defined as one Astronomical Unit (AU), which takes one year (precisely 365.25 days) to complete an orbit. The extra 1/4 of a day each year accounts for why every four years we add an extra day in February (Leap Day). This is easier than trying to add one quarter of a day, or 6 hours, to each year.

The Earth revolves around the Sun at a speed of about 18.5 miles/sec, or 30 km/sec (0.5 km/min), on average despite where it is in its elliptical arc.
