The epithelium that lines the stomach has many deep infoldings, or pits. in what way do these pits function as glands?

    The gastric pits are at the bottom of the infoldings of stomach’s lining epithelium. The gastric gland is located at the bottom of the gastric pits. There are different types of cells in the glad that secreted digestive enzymes.

    For example: At the base of the gland, chief cells secrete pepsinogen that digests proteins and lipase that digest fats.

    Oxyntic cells are along the length of the gland and that secrete hydrochloric acid (HCl), that is required to activate other enzymes.

    Mucous neck cells secrete mucous.
