How would cloud cover influence daily maximum and minimum temperature

It would block the suns rays from coming in and keep heat traped, typically causing the minimum temperature to lesson along with the maximum. I believe that the temperatures also tend to equill each other out more, such as 45-55 instead of 55-85, and that's why coastal regains are more moderate compared to inland.
