Why does an ecologist must consider both speciation and extinction when analyzing the diversity of life on earth

    My best guess is that when an ecologist studies a living thing/organism they must consider the numbers that are left of the specific creature they are studying. This means that when an animal goes extinct, the diversity of life on Earth shortens! Now I may not be right because there are no answer choices so do forgive me!
