Calcium is required for many processes in the body, including these:

formation and maintenance of bones and teeth

clotting of blood

conduction of nerve impulses

muscle contractions

peristalsis in the gastrointestinal track

Blood calcium levels are controlled by the parathyroid glands. These tiny glands, located behind the thyroid gland, monitor the levels of calcium in the blood. The parathyroid glands release parathyroid hormone (PTH) to increase calcium levels. Why do overactive parathyroid glands affect all other body systems?

As stated in the question, calcium is essential in many body processes in a number of body systems. Overactive parathyroid glands will cause the release of too much calcium into the bloodstream, and this will throw the many processes calcium is used for into disarray.
