    A layer in a body of water where the density increases with the depth

    A pycnocline is a boundary that separates two liquid layers of different densities. Formation of pycnocline usually can result from changes in salinity or temperature. Changes in salinity and temperature are very small bellow pycnocline but are seasonal in surface waters.
