Symbiotic bacteria have already established their colonies in the host hence prevent the invasion of other bacteria through competition. They act as a barrier to keep nastier pathogens at bay. These bacteria are also important in mucosal immunology of humans by influencing on the development and function of both innate and adaptive branches of the immune system.
