The subunits are the sugar-phosphates and nucleotides (adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine for DNA, adenine, guanine, cytosine and uracil for RNA). The sugar-phosphate backbone is the out edge of the twisted "ladder" you typically see in drawings of DNA and RNA. It is what holds the molecule together.
