    Dry conditions and actual deserts in the sub-tropical zone are located mainly n the west side of mountain ranges because mainly due to two factors-one the prevailing trade winds blow from the NE or SE so that these dry zones are in the rain shadow, and secondly there are usually cold ocean currents on the west side that cause dessication.
