A cholinergic crisis is characterized by the excessive stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system. Cholinergic crisis is an over-stimulation at a neuromascular junction due to an excess of acetylcholine, as a result of the inactivity of the Acetylcholine Esterase, which normally breaks down acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is the primary transmitter of the impulses within the parasympathetic nervous system, (the part of the autonomous system that contacts muscles, dilates blood vessels, among other functions.
