What would we expect to occur to the wage rate and number of persons hired if they workers formed a union?

If the workers formed a union, I would expect the wage rate to go up and re hiring, while workers would want to protect their jobs, i am sure that if there was say an expansion they would promote hiring of union workers rather than contracting out where their workers were capable of doing the new work.
