A chain of command is defined as the hierarchy of authority. Authority comes from the top and is passed down through channels known as chains until it gets to the bottom. The military provides a great example of the chain of command. If something were to happen on a low level, they wouldn't just go talk to the President about it, it would be passed up and up until finally reaching where it needs to go.
