Depolarization must be carried out at the sinoatrial node in order for the heart to beat. This depolarization occurs due to the movement of sodium ions through the cell membranes of the cells in the sinoatrial node. If a chemical reduces the transport of sodium ions, the sinoatrial node will depolarize less quickly, meaning the person's heart rate would slow down.
