In transition metals why is sometimes the d and not f orbital used

    While making Structure of an atom we use Auf Baw Principle which states "Electrons fill lowest energy subshell that is available first"

    It goes like this Is2s2p3s3p4s3d4p5s and so on. Here because 4s has less energy therefore it comes first.
