What is significant about the elements within the same group of the periodic table?

    Well, for one, they have the same amount of electrons in the outmost shell: Group 1 has 1, Group 2 has 2 etc ... They all share similar chemical properties, for example Group 6 (?) S and Se both are acidic oxides.
