    They, then are in the same group because they have similar chemical properties. Of course they have different atomic numbers, because each atomic number is unique.

    When you make the electron distribution of those elements you get:

    Be: [He] 2s^2

    Ba: [Xe] 6s^2

    It is the valence electron shell with two electrons (s^2) what explains their chemical similarity.
