As a metal corrodes, what happens to oxygen?

    Oxygen is reduced. For example, corrosion of iron occurs according to the scheme:

    4Fe + 3O₂⁰ + 6H₂O = 4Fe (O⁻²H) ₃

    O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e⁻ = 4OH⁻

    Fe - 3e⁻ = Fe⁺³
