What does the statement "the properties of salt are different from the properties of the elements that go into making them" mean?

    Salts are made up of a combination of halogen atoms and alkali metal atoms. These atoms have specific properties. If they combine with other atoms, however, and they make salts, then these salts have different properties than the atoms that make them.
