How could you tell if a sample of matter is an element

If a physical process can separate it into smaller forms than it is a mixture, if not then it is a compound or element, if burning the sample doesnt break into a smaller fraction then it is an element.

Test it by checking it's hardness, texture, and how it stands against other substances.
