    Alcohols are not hydrocarbons.

    By definition, hydrocarbons are only made up of hydrogen and carbon.

    By definition, alcohols have at least one group of - OH.

    Since alcohols have oxygen, they can't be considered a hydrocarbon.

    (Alcohols may contain hydrocarbons groups, but that doesn't necessarily classify them as hydrocarbons themselves.)
