A mass spectrometer is a machine that measures the mass of different substances by ionizing them and determining their paths in magnetic and electric fields. Few 2 + ions are created in a mass spectrometer because it is difficult to remove an electron from an ion that is already positive. It requires a lot more energy to accomplish this feat so it rarely happens in the process.
