Calculate the average bond order for a p-o bond (such as the one shown in blue) in a phosphate ion.

    A phosphate ion is PO4 (3-). Bond order = number of bonds / number of "connections" to an element. Bond order PO4 (3-) = 5 / 4 = 1.25
