What is the empirical formula of a substance that consists of 85.60% carbon and 14.40% hydrogen?

    assuming you have 100 grams of sample

    85.60gC/molecular weight 12g = 7.13

    14.40gH/molecular weight 1.008g = 14.2857

    divide the larger amount calculated by the smaller 14.2857/7.13 = 2

    so 7.13 means oneC and 14.2857 means twoH
