For the reaction of carbon with carbon dioxide to make carbon monoxide, one set of conditions produced a Kc = 1.2 * 10-1. At equilibrium at a certain temperature, the concentration of product was 0.60 M. What was the concentration of carbon dioxide at that temperature? C (s) + CO2 (g) ⇌ 2CO (g)

    Explanation:

    C (s) + CO2 (g) ⇌ 2CO (g)

    Remember in equilibrium, we work with [M]. The expression for Kc is this one:

    Kc = [CO]² / [C]. [CO₂]

    [C] = x

    [CO₂] = x

    1.2 x10⁻¹ = 0.60² / x²

    x² = 0.60² / 1.2 x10⁻¹

    x² = 3

    x = √3 = 1.73
