Glucose is stored in the body in the form of glycogen. Describe Glycogenolysis, the process by which glucose is released from glycogen to be utilized by glycolysis. Describe the role of each of the following enzymes involved in the process.

    Glycogenolysis is the process of breakdown of the glycogen molecule into glucose which is stored in the body. Glycogen is a complex sugar that is in the form of a long chain of glucose which breaks into a simple sugar that is glucose which is absorbed by the body. Glycogenolysis usually occurs in muscle and liver. The enzymes which are involved in glycogenolysis are phosphorylase kinase and glycogen phosphorylase. Phosphorylation is the process by which both the enzymes are being activated. These enzymes have different isoforms found in muscle, liver or brain. The main function of these enzymes is to initiate the breakdown of glycogen molecule and conversion of glucose-1-phosphate to glucose-6-phosphate.
