A dependent variable can be described as a variable which depends on the independent variable. It is the variable which is under observation or experimentation.

An independent variable can be described as a variable which does not depend on any other factor. Changes in the independent variable change the dependent variable.

The independent variable in the following scenario can be the sun. The dependent variable can be the specific heat capacity. The air will cool faster than water as it has lower specific capacity than water.
