Five samples of argon gas are described in the table below. Rank the samples in order of increasing average kinetic energy of the atoms in them.

That is, select "1" next to the sample in which the argon atoms have the lowest average kinetic energy. Select "2" next to the sample in which the argon atoms have the next lowest average kinetic energy, and so on.

Sample

Amount Pressure Temp.

1. 1.0 mol 2.7 atm - 101. degrees Celsius

2. 1.9 mol 3.0 atm - 68. degrees Celsius

3. 1.7 mol 2.6 atm - 77. degrees Celsius

4. 3.0 mol 1.9 atm - 84. degrees Celsius

5. 2.0 mol 1.0 atm - 62. degrees Celsius

They need to be out in order from 1 "lowest" to 5 "highest" kinetic energy.

    1. < 4. < 3. < 2. < 5.

    Explanation:

The average kinetic energy of the argon atoms depends only on the temperature.

Thus, the order of average kinetic energies is the order of increasing temperatures.

    1. - 101 °C < 4. - 84 °C < 3. - 77 °C < 2. - 68°C < 5. - 62°C

    1 < 2 < 3 < 4 < 5
