Consider the graph. A graph labeled Heating Curve has time as the horizontal axis and Temperature as the vertical axis. A line starts at 0 and rises to 1500 degrees where it levels off briefly; this section of line is labeled solid. The line continues to rise until it levels off at about 2750; this curve is labeled Liquid. After running horizontal for some time, the line rises again; this curve is labeled Gas. Based on the information in the graph, which statement best applies to a gas? Its particles have the highest average kinetic energy. Its particles have the smallest volume of all three states of matter. Its particles are slowing down because of a temperature increase. Its particles are moving apart due to repulsion between them.

Its particles have the highest average kinetic energy

    Explanation:

This can be explained by the Kinetic Molecular Theory which explains the physical characteristics of solid, liquid, gas and how phases change from one to another.

    Kinetic Energy ∝ Temperature

The theory states the that average kinetic energy of particles is directly proportional to the temperature. When a solid is heated, its temperature and kinetic energy increase, eventually melting it into a liquid. If the temperature is raised even more, kinetic energy will increase even more and the liquid will eventually become a gas. This show that the gas has the highest temperature and hence the highest average kinetic energy compared to solid and liquid.
