Oxygen is used up by all the cell for cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is essential for the survival of the cell. It a process by which glucose is oxidized in the presence of oxygen into carbon dioxide and water. ATP is produced during the process.

ATP provides energy for the various cellular processes.

So lack of oxygen will results in decrease in ATP which will be fatal for cells.

Moreover, the brain without oxygen consumes the electrons in cellular metabolism and forms CO2. CO2 is acidic in nature

Because of generation CO2, The brain reaches acidosis very quickly which results in death of neurons and glial cells.
