Chemicals can be dangerous because of their toxic, corrosive, flammable or explosive properties.

Many reagents, particularly organic solvents, burn in the presence of a flame. Others can decompose explosively with heat. If you use a Bunsen burner, or other intense source of heat, move chemical reagent cans away from the burner. Never heat flammable liquids with a cigarette lighter. Close the lighter key and the gas passage when you do not use it.

Do not inhale the vapors of chemicals. Work in an extractor cabinet whenever you use volatile substances. If an excessive concentration of vapors still occurs in the laboratory, immediately open the windows. If on any occasion you have to smell a substance, the proper way to do it is to direct a little steam into the nose. Do not bring your nose close to inhale directly from the test tube.

Pipetting reagents directly with the mouth is strictly prohibited. Always use a special device to pipette liquids.

A possible danger of poisoning, often forgotten, is through the skin. Avoid contact of chemicals with the skin, especially those that are toxic or corrosive, using disposable gloves. Wash your hands often.
