    1. For n = 1, first energy level

    n = 1, l can have value 0 to (n-1) i. e. 0 only. Thus l can have only one value of zero which corresponds to s sublevel.

    2. For n = 2, second energy level

    n=2, l can have value 0 to (n-1) i. e. 0 and 1 only. l = 0 corresponds to s sublevel and l = 1 corresponds to p sublevel.

    3. For n = 3, third energy level

    n=3, l can have value 0 to (n-1) i. e. 0,1 and 2 only. l = 0 corresponds to s sublevel, l = 1 corresponds to p sublevel and l = 2 corresponds to d sublevel.
