In Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales", the pilgrims had to share stories to and from Canterbury. These collection of the tales told made up the Canterbury Tales.

One of these tales is the Pardoner's Tale, which involves the story of the three rioters. In the story, there was an old man eager to die, looking for death. The way he talks of death sounds quite ironic, for people don't normally go around asking to die, or wanting to be dead. Most people, almost everyone tries their best to live for as long as they can, some even scared of death but this old man is more welcoming of death, or dying. This is ironic for unlike most people, he is looking for death.
