Which three statements are true? The tendency of water to minimize its contact with nonpolar substances is called the hydrophobic effect. Hydrophobic molecules clump together in water because fewer water molecules are required to surround them, which results in a smaller decrease in entropy than if the molecules were individually hydrated. Amphipathic (amphiphilic) lipids are the structural basis of biological bilayer membranes. Polar molecules are capable of forming micelles. Hydrophobic molecules are individually hydrated in water, increasing the entropy of the system.

Molecules which tend to hate water molecules or the molecules of water are known as hydrophobic molecules.

Basically, hydrophobic molecules hate water or molecules of water.

On the other hand, molecules which tend to love water molecules or the molecules of water are known as hydrophilic molecules.

Basically, hydrophilic molecules love water molecules.

Amphipathic or amphiphilic lipids are defined as the lipids which are main constituent of biological bilayer membrane. These lipids contain a hydrophilic or polar end and they also contain a hydrophobic or non-polar end.

Amphiphilic molecules lead to the formation of miscelles.

Therefore, we can conclude that the three statements which are true are as follows.

The tendency of water to minimize its contact with non-polar substances is called the hydrophobic effect. Hydrophobic molecules clump together in water because fewer water molecules are required to surround them, which results in a smaller decrease in entropy than if the molecules were individually hydrated. Amphipathic (amphiphilic) lipids are the structural basis of biological bilayer membranes.
