Relative dating is a technique used to arrange geological events in a sequential order by analyzing the rocks. Relative dating technique doesn't give the actual date of fossils like in other dating processes like carbon dating. Each rock layer is called stratum.

Sedimentary rocks are laid down in an order with one layer above the other. Older rocks occupy the bottom position and the younger rocks occupy the top positions. This is called principle of horizontality.
