Clayey soils are the least permeable of all the types of soils. Sandy soils are the most permeable.

Permeability deals with the ability of a material to be able to transmit fluid or allow passage of fuild through its pore spaces.

Pore spaces are the spaces between soil grains.

In clay, the pore spaces are tight and the particles are very fine grained. Clay particles are the finest particles. This will prevent any fluid from going through.

Sands are coarse and gritty in nature. They have wide pores and high permeability.

If we put clay in cylinder open at both ends and we do the same for sand. If we pour water through the top at the same time, we would observe that water will pass through the sand faster than the clay.
