The mass percentage shows the percentage of each of the elements with which a chemical compound is formed. It is calculated taking into account the molar mass of each element, in grams or moles. The mass of each element is divided by the mass of the solution.

    Explanation:

To exemplify this definition I will place an example:

What would be the mass percentage of 5 g of sodium hydroxide that dissolves in 100 g of water?

The solution would be that the total mass is the amount of sodium hydroxide plus the amount of water, like this: 100 g + 5 g = 105 g.

The mass of sodium hydroxide is 5 g, therefore, its mass percentage in the solution would be:

    mass percentage = (mass of sodium hydroxide/total solution mass) x 100 = (5 g/105 g) x 100 = 4.76%

Therefore, the mass percentage of 5 g of sodium hydroxide that dissolves in 100 g of water is 4.76%
